Literature Text

Species Name: Homo sapiens cantatio aquus
Common Name: Water Mage
Species Type: Magic Class

Language: English
Rarity: Common

Appearance

Physical Traits: Water Mages are humanoid in appearance, with webbed digits and gills on either side of their necks.  These gills are not normally visible outside the water unless the Water Mage is sick or injured.  Their ears are pointed slightly at the tip, and their skin is slightly blue or green tinted in certain extremities; namely, the lips, finger tips, ear tips and genitalia.  Some may have pointier teeth than usual, however this is rare.

Build: Variable.  Water Mages tend to be streamlined to assist with swimming, and it is uncommon to have an overweight Water Mage.  However, a Water Mage can potentially be any build.

Eyes: Any natural eye colour is possible, however the most common eye colours are blue and green.  Dark brown eyes are extremely rare.

Hair: Hair is often light, ocean-related colours; blue, green and grey are common colours.  Browns and blondes are less common, and black is fairly rare.  Water Mages cannot have red or orange hair.

Abilities

Type Relevant: All Water Mages have the ability to create and control water.  The gills on the side of their necks also allows them to breathe while underwater.  They can use their power offensively by creative destructive waves, or defensively by sealing themselves in a large bubble.  Advanced magic users can learn to harness a subset of the Water Mage power known as Ice Power.

Magic: Water Mage blood is much thinner than that of a normal species, which in turn decreases their body temperature.  A Water Mage’s normal body temperature is around 32C (90F), and they have a high blood pressure.  Because their body is adapted for an aquatic lifestyle, Water Mages will tend to spend most of their waking hours underwater; they come ashore to eat and rest, however.  Out of the water, they can liquefy water particles in the air for use in their moves.

Social Traits

Community Name: N/A
Habitat: Because they are best suited for an aquatic environment, most Water Mages will live in wet, marshy areas or near a large body of water.  They cannot survive at high altitude and stick to low-lying areas as a result.

Community Structure: Water Mages live in isolated family groups.  While some family groups may congregate to form larger communities, most tend to remain separate from other families.  These families often include grandparents, parents and children.  The family groups operate like typical human families, with the parents usually having the most control over the group’s actions.

General Demeanour: Water Mages are characterised as being peaceful and kind.  They are typically friendly, and value goodwill towards others.  However, they are also very protective of their families.

Interspecies Relations: Being a friendly and caring race, Water Mages are usually friendly to other species.  They are often especially friendly towards other Mages, and it is not uncommon for them to ally closely with Electric Mage clans.  They have no natural enemies, although like most they are wary around Shadows.

Pets & Livestock: While they may sometimes form an affinity with a water-dwelling creature, it is fairly uncommon for Water Mages to have pets or livestock.

Water Mages: FAQ

Q: What happens if a Water Mage's gills get blocked?  Are they still able to breathe?
A: Water Mages are amphibious, meaning when they're out of the water they use their noses/mouths to breathe instead of their gills.  If their gills are blocked, it simply means they cannot breathe underwater; they can still breathe on land.

Q: Will Water Mages ally/mate with Fire Mages?
A: It's not unheard of for Fire Mage clans to ally with Water Mages.  As for mating...it is possible, though I can see it being difficult for a typical aquaphobic Fire Mage to want to do so.
